Meet the caregiver: Tim Dempsey
What brought you to Best Friends?
I was no longer fulfilled by my job working in television. It may sound hokey, but I wanted to be part of an organization that was about positivity, kindness and doing good. I had read Best Friends magazine for years and was inspired by what they were doing and the goals they had for the future. My first step was to volunteer for a week at the Sanctuary. Like everyone else, I fell in love with the place, and when the time was right, I applied for a dog caregiver position.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Sleep! Catching up on Netflix and Hulu. Hanging out with friends. My absolute favorite thing to do is spend time with my own dogs, Molly, and Chico.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
Spending time with the dogs. The best part of my day is first thing in the morning when I check on and say hello to each of the dogs in my care. The pups are so happy to see you! They are not looking for treats or a walk or their breakfast. They simply enjoy the feeling of my touch and affection. It’s a great way to bond with each of the dogs and an amazing way to start the day.
What would you share with someone who hasn’t yet visited the Sanctuary?
Be sure to take a guided tour to learn about the incredible history and journey of Best Friends. Volunteer in as many different areas as you can: dogs, cats, bunnies, horses, pigs, etc. Each area offers a unique and unforgettable experience. On future visits you can focus on volunteering in the area you most enjoyed. Stay in a place that allows pets. Sleepovers are a wonderful way to experience the Sanctuary and enjoy the company of our amazing animals.
