Book review: ‘The Ascension of Heidi’
The Ascension of Heidi: A Longhaired Dachshund by June Sananjaleen Hughes. Reverence for Life, 2024. Paperback, 212 pages.
In many cultures and traditions throughout the centuries, a small group of women acted as medicine women, healers, and holders of sacred lore. These individuals, who came to be known as “wise women,” were often ignored or persecuted, but their knowledge passed down through generations. I was reminded of these wise women as I began reading June Sananjaleen Hughes’ fascinating memoir, The Ascension of Heidi: A Longhaired Dachshund.
In this remarkable look at June’s life with Heidi and numerous other rescued dachshunds, the author, an animal communicator and intuitive, opens a world of possibilities for our animal companions as they share their innate wisdom with us during their time on Earth and following their transitions to an afterlife.
Much of what June covers, such as animal communication, healing practices like energy healing and flower essences, and mindful meditation, is not new. But her gentle examination of the sacred nature of animals combined with her willingness to share that knowledge on behalf of her animal teachers makes The Ascension of Heidi: A Longhaired Dachshund a book well worth reading.
Many readers will already be on the author’s wavelength, but others might find June’s life journey from England to her Virginia countryside dwelling an eye-opening experience.
Let's make every shelter and every community no-kill in 2025
Our goal at Best Friends is to support all animal shelters in the U.S. in reaching no-kill in 2025. No-kill means saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved, accounting for community safety and good quality of life for pets.
Shelter staff can’t do it alone. Saving animals in shelters is everyone’s responsibility, and it takes support and participation from the community. No-kill is possible when we work together thoughtfully, honestly, and collaboratively.
