Best Friends Animal Society’s Partner, Horry County, Passes Laws to Reduce Shelter Crowding and Improve Animal Welfare

Kanab, UT – Best Friends Animal Society is excited to see Horry County leadership pass common-sense ordinances to reduce shelter crowding and improve animal welfare in their community. Best Friends continued to keep a hands-on approach by partnering with the county and granting over $40,000 in funding during 2021.

For almost a year, Best Friends Animal Society worked hand-in-hand with Horry County and Captain Wyatt to improve ordinances that would empower the county to embrace TNVR (trap/neuter/vaccinate/return) to humanely manage a growing community cat population using industry best practices, to end the sale of commercially bred dogs and cats in retail pet stores, improve the definition of shelters for dogs who live outdoors, protect dogs transported in open truck or trailer beds on highways, and empower law enforcement to rescue a pet locked in a hot car.

Best Friends has provided $40,000 in grant funding during 2021 as well as policy and technical guidance to support the TNVR program. Horry County is the first county in the state to receive this level of support from Best Friends Animal Society and the organization has committed to helping those counties most in need of financial, policy, and legislative support to end the killing of healthy and treatable dogs and cats in SC.
